While the Haiti toll was more than 250,000, just 600 people died in Chile. The 2001 Bhuj quake of 7.7 magnitude claimed 20,000 lives, according to official figures. Though 9% of Chileans became homeless as their houses developed cracks, the toll remained low as the buildings didn’t collapse. The reason is Chile’s strict building codes. After a massive 9.5 earthquake in 1960 (the strongest ever recorded), the Chilean government developed a seismic design code for all new buildings. It was revised in 1993 to include advances in technology. The system that keeps Chile’s buildings standing firm is called the “strong columns, weak beams” system. Times Of India, dt. 25th, September, 2011 PROPERTY INFO NOW ONLINEFriday, September 16th, 2011 There is good news for property owners in Noida. They will no longer have to run to the Noida Authority (NA) office for getting a no objection certificate (NOC) or other such works. “This does not include the plots given to farmers and allottees after 2006. When included, the number will go up to 87,000,“ says NA chairman, Balvinder Kumar. In fact, 22,000 residential properties have already been made available online on the NA website, noidaauthorityonline.com. For those who have bought the property on installment, even information regarding the number of installments paid and left will be available online. “This initiative has been taken to provide relief to the people who often have to make several rounds of our offices to get small works done. It will also reduce the crowd at our office and also help our officials to work without interruption,“ says Kumar. “This will help reduce corruption. When I had to take an NOC for my house, the staff indirectly asked me for a bribe. And since I had decided not to give any bribe, I had to make so many rounds,“ says Lt Col (retd) RK Saxena. “It has come as such a relief. “But the CEO must ensure that this job is finished as fast as possible so that all the allottees can benefit,“ says Suresh Prasad of Sector 15. Rajkumari Tankha rtankha@hindustantimes.com Indian Grand Prix F 1 News: In 2012, get ready for another raceMonday, September 5th, 2011 While the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) is still to get the Grade-A certification for hosting its first Formula One Grand Prix next month, the venue has been chosen for yet another motor race to be held in 2012. According to the schedule released on the Formula One’s website, the BIC will host one of the 20 events to be held from October 26-28 next year. “BIC has got the slot of October for second Indian Grand Prix. It will now be an annual feature. The FIA inspection team was satisfied with work progress and track quality. The first Indian Grand Prix will be held as scheduled this year,” Askari H Zaidi, senior vice president of Jaypee Sports India Limited (JPSI), told Hindustan Times on Sunday. According to the 2012 calendar, a total of 20 races are scheduled next year. The first race will be held in Melbourne, Australia from March 15 to 18. Next year an additional circuit in US would be developed. As per the FIA guidelines, the race circuit should get clearance before 60, or preferably 90, days of the event. But in case of a new venue, there has been some delay in homologation process in the past. Last year, the venue of Korean Grand Prix was given Grade-A certification just 10 days before the event. “FIA team judges the progress of work and only then fix the date near the event otherwise they straightforward disapprove,” said Zaidi. Meanwhile, for first Indian Grand Prix to be held from October 28-30 this year, JPSI has requested for around 1,100 police personnel for providing security to visitors outside the circuit.
